THE BONESETTER: My graphic novel, from concept to creation.

As far back as I can remember, I’ve aspired to live a life of creative expression.  I excelled in school as a graphic designer and illustrator.  I was never a fan of other subjects that hindered my need to express creativity in any form.  I practiced my art on the back of textbooks and test papers.  Art was my passion and I decided to make a career of it.  For the past 14 years I’ve been fortunate to work as an art director in the exciting world of marketing and advertising.  I’ve worked in many creative shops, from large firms, to boutique agencies and studios.  I’ve designed a multitude of print and digital works for big brands, small brands and start-ups alike.  It’s been an adventure and I’ve met some amazing people along the way, but…and there is always a “but”… I have these ideas in my head, ideas that churn and evolve into stories.

20140516-202244.jpgI’m a visual person and as most visual people can confirm, we can actually see our “stories” as clear as day.  I see my characters in environments, their challenges and rewards.  The emotions of pain and triumph as they interact and weave their lives into a wonderful narrative that I simply need to create and share.

20140516-202303.jpgSo there you have it; that was my introduction, the prologue to my next artistic journey.  I’m going to create a graphic novel called THE BONESETTER.  This blog has been set up so that friends can track my progress over the next 12 months.  There will be a zillion challenges along the way.  I’ll be writing, illustrating, inking, coloring, lettering and designing the whole darn thing myself.  I’ll be asking questions along the way, while also sharing my own trial-by-error advice as I make mistakes.  I have no idea what I want to do with the finished graphic novel when completed, and I won’t worry about that till it’s time.  For now I want to create that story that’s been churning and evolving in my head.  I hope that the finished product will be something I’m proud of. I’ll be posting as much material as I can to this blog, in the hope that interested readers will be willing to provide comments, critique, and most importantly advice.

20140516-202221.jpgI’m excited, terrified, confident and ready to share my ideas as they develop into worlds, stories and finally, hopefully, a graphic novel.

Aspiring comic book / graphic novel creator and enthusiast.

Good luck on your journey! I know that you have put a lot of time and effort in already…however several questions arise:
    1) Why is your novel based on an Amy Tan work from 2001?
    2) I like your self-imposed deadline…
    3) It takes a lot of guts to open yourself up to critique…I can just see what some people will write…
    4) Are you making a graphic novel because Razi needs pictures??? lol!!!

May John Cathal live another day….

Elan in response to you questions:

    1) THE BONESETTER is loosely based on Amy Tan’s book The Joy Luck Club…not really…at all…ever. ;)
    2) Without a deadline this graphic novel may never be finished. It’s not that I’m lazy…there’s just lots of good TV to watch (Penny Dreadful and the new The Strain series).
    3) I’m an open book about my book. I’m starting at the foundation of a script and moving on to art, inks, colours, letters, etc. I don’t have much experience so I welcome the feedback and advice.
    4) Huh?
